In 1965, two important events happened in two parts of the world, not even that far apart geographically, but abyssally distant in every other way:
· a woman who was not particularly beautiful, nor particularly young, but very enterprising, named Mary Quant, in London, on King’s Road, by shortening a skirt by thirty centimeters invented the "miniskirt," forever changing the habits and customs of women (and also men!) all over the world;
· a group of gentlemen of a certain age, important for their culture and sensitivity, helped by some willing young people, gathered on August 8 in a cinema in Sassello, on Viale delle Rimembranze, founded the Association “Friends of Sassello.”
Undoubtedly, the two events had a different echo in the world, to the advantage of the miniskirt, of course. But on a local level, the “Friends of Sassello” Association was also very important, even if the spread of the miniskirt was greater, but only due to contingent facts.
We want to remember with affection, even if in a playful way, those gentlemen: Mario Garino (in the photo), Guido Farris, Renato Ottone, Carlo Castello, Antonio Giuseppe Carta, Carlo Marchesani, Ivo Razzore, Antonio Petrini, Giuseppe Magnano, GianBartolo Dabove, Francesco Garibaldi, Grato Dino Manfredi, Pietro Rossi, Giovanni Romano, Livio Panelli, Lorenzo Garbarini, Jacopo Denegri, Don Giovanni Morielli.
They had talked and discussed it so much that at a certain point the project became operational: they wrote a statute and committed themselves to spending part of their precious time out of love for this town, true or adopted sons, to protect and enhance it in memory of so many happy seasons.
The hoped-for activities were many: to promote and support all research related to the territory of Sassello; to collect, catalog, and finally enhance all the artistic assets left by the Perrando family and kept in the Perrando museum they themselves founded; to promote the development of the library, started with the donation of about 1500 books, especially favoring the history and culture of Sassello; to take a deep interest in the historical and artistic heritage of the territory to safeguard the landscape and social environment; and finally to spread such knowledge to an ever wider audience through conferences, public debates, and publications.
In these decades, the torch has always remained lit.
The Friends of Sassello Association manages, through an agreement with the Municipality of Sassello, the library and the Perrando museum, which it founded in 1967, and carries out intense publishing activity. In addition to having published about fifteen notebooks and books, since 1996 it has printed the information periodical "La Voce del Sassello - the newspaper of the hinterland."
Thanks to its many initiatives, the Association, which has entered the consciousness of the people of Sassello and those who love the town, is very much alive and is on its way to achieving other ambitious goals.
The hope is that that group of gentlemen of a certain age and the willing young people who collaborated, some from the empyrean where they now live in serene bliss, others still watching over and collaborating so that the baton remains in suitable hands, still think with just pride that their decision back then was right and are satisfied with how things have gone.
